Certain penguin species, particularly Gentoo and Adélie penguins, do offer pebbles to potential mates as part of their courtship ritual. Male penguins search for the smoothest, most perfect pebble to present to a female to signify interest and build a nest. If the female accepts, it strengthens their bond.

Key Details of the Pebble Ritual:

Sign of Commitment: 

The act is similar to a human marriage proposal, where the pebble represents a token of partnership.

Purpose: 

These stones are used to build a raised nest, which keeps eggs dry and safe from icy, melting water.

Ritualistic Action: 

The male carefully selects a pebble and places it at the female's feet. If she accepts, they form a breeding pair. 

While sometimes characterised as a romantic gesture, it is fundamentally a practical, functional behaviour for nest building and mate selection
